THE FUR TRADE Animals have coats for a reason, they use it for camouflage, and to keep warm, but most of all to mark their territory by rolling around in their own excrement. So for those of you out there that wear and buy into the fur trade, how on earth can you lower yourselves down to such a level of buying into such an horrific trade where animals have suffered so much? With the amount of animals that are slaughtered, i wander what sort of damage is being caused to the Eco system as animals were placed on this earth for a reason. Maybe compassion is a dirty word for some people!
Although the complete answer as to why the massacre still continues year after year without the support of the Canadian public is complex, the 2 main reasons for the killing are: 1) the continuing (and rising) demand for SEAL PELTS (see save the seals page)
As many as 45% of the animals are skinned alive and the males are routinely dismembered for their penis bone alone. ("illegal" by the ridiculously unenforced set of "government standards and rules overseeing the hunt"). Moreover, independent observers have noted that as many as 1 out of 3 "targeted" seals slip away wounded into the ice holes and sea leads to be uncounted, unnoted, and unused in any way, shape, or form.
German Shepherds are the most common dogs killed for their fur in China. The following sequence of photos was taken in harbin (China). It shows a dog being tethred to a gate with a wire noose before being stabbed in the groin and left to bleed to death - this is done to avoid damage to the pelt. Life is cheap. At a German auction, the cost of one German Shepherd skin was just $9. While a Beijing company with 50,000 pelts in store quoted a price per pelt of $8.50.
Research has shown that much of this Chinese dog fur is imported into France to make fur jackets which are mainly sold in the Alps to Skiers. One company had 2000 dog furs and expected another 1000 - they were labeled as "loup d'Asie" which means Asian Wolf. Even the fur industry is uncomfortable about the source of these furs.
When skinning begins the dog is unconscious, but not necessarily dead. Investigators were told by a middle man in the Chinese fur trade that any label could be put in any garment, depending on the preference of the buyer. In other words the company supplying the fur were perfectly willing to disguies the true source of the fur. The fur was sold to a dealer and the dogs flesh was sold to a restaurant to be eaten.

transport, then cruelly killed.
A variety of methods exist for trapping animals in the wild for their fur - some traps are designed to kill, others to drown or hold the animal until the trapper returns. Most trapping is done not as someones livelyhood, but for 'recreation
Animals die of starvation, fright, cold, or if the trapper returns before they die the animal may be crushed or beaten to death. Some animals will knaw off their on limb in an attempt to escape the trap.
Here we see a domestic dog that was caught in a trap while out for a walk. Major trapping nations managed to block European legislation that would have banned the import of fur from animals that had been caught in leghold traps. These traps are banned in 88 countries due to the immense suffering they cause.

the conditions lead to sterotypical behaviour...
